To learn how to play poker, you need to speak the language. From ‘ante’ to ‘straight flush’, there’s a wide range of poker glossary terms that will help you understand the mechanics of the game before you risk your chips.

Poker Basics

Five playing cards spread on a green felt table beside a stack of poker chips.

Foundational poker terms define the common actions and outcomes that appear in every hand.

Bet

As a verb, the action of wagering money during a poker game. As a noun, the money that is wagered.

Example: The first player placed a bold bet of $200.

Community cards

The cards placed by the dealer face-up on the table during a poker game. Players use community cards to build their hand. The most popular types of poker feature a total of five community cards.

Example: The community card on the river helped Jane create a flush, turning the entire game around.

Hand

In poker, ‘hand’ means one of two things:

  • The combination of cards that a player presents at the end of a round, or
  • The whole duration of a single game round.

Example: She won the pot because she formed the strongest hand: four kings.

Hole cards

The cards dealt to each player at the start of a game. The number of hole cards you receive will depend on the game you’re playing. For example, in Texas Hold’em, players receive two hole cards; in Omaha, they receive four.

Example: He felt good about his chances when he received two aces as his hole cards.

Pot

The total amount of chips or money placed on the table, eventually paid out to the winner(s).

Example: After his last opponent folded, Adam won the pot.

Betting Actions

In any poker game, there’s a set of decisions you can make when the betting round reaches you.

All In

Betting all your chips on a single hand. This is often seen as the ultimate declaration that you’re sure you can win.

Example: After hitting a full house, he decided to go all in.

Bluff

A bet or raise you make when you hold a weak hand. The goal is to intentionally deceive opponents into thinking your hand is better than it actually is, and prompting them to fold.

Example: Even though she only held a pair, Sandra risked it all in a bold bluff.

Call

Matching the amount that another player has wagered during a betting round.

Example: Player A raised the pot by $100. Player B decided to call to stay in the game.

Check

Not placing a bet during a betting round and instead passing the action to the next player. Essentially, you voluntarily skip your turn but stay in the game.

Example: The quality of his hand didn’t change, so he opted to check.

Raise

Increasing the amount of a wager placed by another player. Once you raise, other players then have to decide if they’ll match this new, higher bet or fold.

Example: She felt confident, so she raised him $60 on the turn.

Fold

Throwing out your cards and exiting the current hand.

Example: After the river, she knew her odds of forming a winning hand were slim, so she opted to fold.

Game Rounds

In most variations of poker, including Texas Hold’em and Omaha, there are several rounds that take place in a specific order. These rounds provide players with the opportunity to place bets or to keep the stakes as they are.

Pre-Flop

The first betting round, which occurs after players receive their private hole cards, but before the first three community cards are placed.

Example: After receiving Q♥ A♣ hole cards, Ahmed placed a large pre-flop wager.

The Flop

The first three community cards laid in the centre of the table. A betting round follows the placement of these cards.

Example: The flop showed K♥ 10♦ 5♠, a promising addition to Ahmed’s hole cards.

The Turn

The fourth community card laid in the centre of the table. Another round of betting takes place after this card is displayed.

Example: With a 2♣ turn, Ahmed wasn’t sure if he would be able to complete his straight.

The River

The final community card laid in the centre of the table. Once this is placed, players have one last opportunity to bet.

Example: When a J♠ appeared on the river, Ahmed decided to go all in.

The Showdown

The point where all remaining players reveal their cards to see who has the best hand.

Example: At the showdown, Ahmed’s opponent revealed a four of a kind and claimed the pot for themselves.
